I am a second-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin, working under the supervision of Dr. Catharine H. Echols on the Children’s Research Laboratory. I have a B.A. in English and Linguistics (2005) from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) and a M.A. in Developmental Psychology from the same university (2007). My main research interest is children’s developing cognitive abilities. I focus on children’s language acquisition. I’m interested in how children acquire morphological and grammatical knowledge, how they learn nouns versus verbs, and how their sensory-motor experience enhance their knowledge of linguistic concepts. I am also interested in children’s developing systems of explanations and religious cognition. I am also interested in quantitative experimental methodologies applied to the research in Linguistics and Psychology. The current research projects I am involved in are (you can look at a small summary of each one in the Current Research section): (1) An Embodied Cognition Approach to the Acquisition of Action Verbs (Andre Souza & Catharine Echols) (2) Evaluating Evidence for Natural and Supernatural Explanations (Cristine Legare & Andre Souza) (3) The Role of Disfluency on Typicality Judgments (Micah Goldwater, Aaron Hoffman & Andre Souza) (4) Children’s Understanding of Referential Intent (Catharine Echols, Claudia Cardoso-Martins & Andre Souza) (5) The Influence of Native versus Non-native Accents on Reliability (Sheila Krogh-Jespersen, Andre Souza & Catherine Echols) (6) Introdução à Linguística Através do R (Andre Souza, Stefan Th. Gries & Heliana Mello) |
