UT Students: Work in our lab as a PSY 357 student

Working in a psychology lab is a great way to earn job-related skills, experience what graduate school is like, and see what research is all about. Each semester, we invite a small group of highly motivated undergraduates to work in our lab. Hourly commitments are flexible, but studies generally take place in the mornings (8-11) and afternoons (3-6).

What you'll do : Run experiments in Austin-area schools, day cares, and after school programs, help us design studies, organize and enter data, and attend weekly lab meetings. May also include some data analysis and library or internet research.

Skills you'll need: You must love working with children, and be organized, reliable, and highly motivated.

If you are considering graduate school or are unsure about the direction you want to take with your undergraduate degree, research experience such as this is essential!

Teachers, Principals and Program Directors: Invite us to do a research study at your school!

Our lab's research has involved thousands of children across the country. We are always looking for new locations to perform studies. We generally do studies in the greater Austin area, but we have done studies in many parts of Texas.

We try to make our studies enjoyable and educational for everyone. We always try to make testing sessions as short as possible to save class time. Testing occurs in a quiet area on site. Children enjoy the opportunity to share their thoughts with UT students. Generally, after participating in a test session, children get a small prize (such as a toy or a sticker).

Our studies also go through a rigorous ethical screening process at UT. We ensure that all children have parental consent before allowing them to be tested. We are happy to speak with parents if concerns arise. Generally, most parents agree to particpate. At the end of the study, we will send you a copy of the results we discovered. We can even make a presentation at your school.

The research that our lab does is crucial to understanding how children's gender and racial attitudes changes over time. If you're interested in having your school particpate, no matter what part of Texas you're in, please let us know!

Parents: Bring your child in to participate in a study at the Children's Research Lab

While we generally do studies in Austin-area classrooms, we have a few studies that can be done in our laboratory, located in the Psychology building on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

These studies are short (30 minutes or less) and can involve children ages 1-10. We are available to run studies from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Interested? You may contact us via email bigler@psy.utexas.edu or at Dr. Bigler's office phone: 471-6261
