Dear Parents:
We would like to invite you to participate in a study of infant cognition and language learning now being undertaken at the University of Texas Children's Research Laboratory, which is part of the Department of Psychology. Our current study is concerned with infants' ability to learn the names of common objects.
The procedures are entirely safe and not at all complicated. If you choose to participate, you would simply answer a series of questions about how often your infant sees common objects such as dogs, brooms, and cups, and whether or not they have a name for each of the objects. From your answers and the answers of other parents we hope to identify the cognitive processes that typical children would use to learn a name for an object they have never seen before. The questionnaire should take only 20-30 minutes. All results are kept strictly confidential and you will be sent a summary of our findings when we have completed the study.
We hope that you will be able to help us explore this fascinating area of infant development. If you have any questions, please call us at the Childrens Research Center. Our number is 471-6261. If you have any additional questions later, Dr. Leslie B. Cohen, in the Psychology Department, Seay Psychology Building, UT-Austin, will be happy to answer them. His phone number is 471-0189.
By providing answers to this questionnaire you are making a decision to take part in the study. You may discontinue participation in this study at any time for any reason. Your decision to participate or not participate will not affect your or your child's future relations with The University of Texas
Sincerely,
Keith M. Gora M.S.
