Eligibility Guidelines

This is a description of the 2007 eligibility guidelines of the Texas Consortium in Behavioral Neuroscience, which are based on the RFA-MH-07-030: Institutional Research Training Programs: Increasing Diversity.

Diversity Criteria:

1. Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis (Black, Hispanic, and Native Americans).

2. Individuals with disabilities, defined as individuals with physical and/or mental impairments, as determined by the institutional Dean of Students.

3. Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, defined as individuals who come from a family with annual income below established low-income thresholds, and/or as individuals from rural or inner city environments which have traditionally inhibited participation in a research career.

General Criteria:

  • All trainees, predoctoral and postdoctoral, must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • All trainees, predoctoral and postdoctoral, must reside in Texas and be accepted to join the lab of a Texas Consortium training faculty member.
  • Predoctoral candidates must be enrolled full time in a doctoral program in the area of Behavioral Neuroscience.
  • Preference will be given to trainees interested in carrying out research related to the mission of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Trainees interested in research related to the mission of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) and of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) will be also considered.
  • Preference will be given to predoctoral candidates who have successfully completed the first two years of graduate work.
