Hint: Use the index to look up the various mentions of these terms in the text. Note that each term has several subheadings in the text. You should know what to do to assess the various types of reliability and validity. Correlational and Experimental Research You should be able to identify a study as a correlational study (use of subject variables) vs. an experimental study (use of manipulated independent variables). Some studies, those using a P X E factorial design, have both correlational and experimental components. Know the limitations of correlational research and experimental research. Know the advantages and rationale for both types of research. Statistics Re-review the material on pages 127-141 (exclude Table 4.4 on Calculating Standard Deviations). There may be questions that ask you to name the statistical test that would be used to analyze the results of the study or answer a question about some data. You may also be asked to specify a Ho, give dfs, and give the value of the test statistic necessary for statistical significance at a specified alpha level. If asked this, you would be given the necessary tables. You should also be able to look at an Excel statistical printout, determine the statistical test that was used to generate the outcome, and write a sentence that could be used in a results section of an article. You should be able to look at a graph of the outcome of a factorial design and detect the presence or absence of main effects and interactions.
