Long Term Effects of Sports Participation on Academic Achievement in Low-Income Children

by Anamarie Auger

The present study will examine how low-income children’s high school academic achievement is affected by middle school and high school sports participation.  The study will also examine how intensity and duration of sports participation is associated with achievement.  Sports participation has been associated with mixed outcomes and there is little evidence about its effect on low-income children.  The present study will analyze the relationship of participation intensity and duration with academic achievement using multiple regression.  Covariates such as gender, race and parent education will be controlled for in the data analysis.  More research is needed on how sports participation affects academic achievement.  There is a particular need for research in how intensity and duration of sports participation affects achievement.
