Acquisition of Object and Structural Landmark Knowledge in
Virtual Environment Navigation
Advisor: Dr. Brian Stankiewicz
Project Summary:
Remember the first time you were on a new
college campus, UT or elsewhere, and how lost or disorientated you might have
felt? Yet, the more you walked around campus, and the more you learned about how
to get from one place to the next, the better understanding you gained about the
layout of the campus. The topic of
Spatial Navigation
deals with how people learn to navigate through different environments. My
project will specifically investigate what kind of landmarks (object versus
structural landmark knowledge) people use to learn an environment and how these
landmarks are used during navigation. I will also look at how well object and
structural landmarks are remembered one day, one week, and one month after
learning the environment.
