Getting lecture notes off the web.
Question
I can't figure out how to download the lecture notes from the web.
Am I missing something? Sigmund Freud
Answer
To download the lecture notes, first click on the link to the syllabus.
Toward the bottom of the syllabus is a table with the weekly lecture
topics. When you see the title for the lecture you want, you'll notice
that it is in the blue 'link' color that most web pages use. Click on the
title, and the file will download automatically. Most versions of Netscape
will automatically identify the file as one that has been encoded in BinHex
format and will decode it, so that you will be left with an icon of a
powerpoint file on your desktop. From there, double click on the file icon
to start up powerpoint (if the machine you are using has powerpoint on it.
To
go to the class-by-class listing in the syllabus, click here.
If you do not have a utility on your computer that can decompress BinHex
files, don't panic. You can find out more about BinHex
here.
You can download Aladdin Systems' Aladdin Expander, a free utility that
contains a decoder for binhex-ed files from
this site. Just go to the Freeware/Shareware section and download the program. Aladdin Expander has
versions for both Mac and Windows.
Special instructions for people running Windows.
Here are some things to consider when downloading the notes on a Windows machine.
- Make sure you have a binhex decoder (like Aladdin Systems' Aladdin Expander). Without a binhex decoder, the notes won't be downloaded.
- Return to the Psych 355 website and go to the syllabus. Move your mouse over the lecture notes that you are interested in printing and right mouse click on them. Choose "Save Target As..." and choose the folder you want to put it in. Save the file.
- Right mouse click on the START button on the lower left side of the screen. Choose "Explore". Find your folder and the file that you saved in it (the file name for chapter one should be "logic.hqx").
- Double click on the .hqx file (which is the file that was saved). Stuffit Expander should automatically decode it (if it didn't decode it automatically when the file was downloaded), creating a powerpoint file (with a .ppt extension). Double click on the power point file to open the lecture notes. If Aladdin does not decode it automatically, maximize Aladdin and click and drag the .hqx folder into the spot that says "drop material to be decoded here".
Another option: PDF files
I have added another option to the web page. If you just want to be able to print out the lecture notes, I have started creating PDF files with the overheads printed three to a page. The files can be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available for free. These files were created with version 4 of Adobe Acrobat, and may require version 4 of Acrobat reader. Acrobat Reader can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com From their site, click on the Plug-ins & updates link to get the latest version of Acrobat Reader.
PDF files for lectures will be available at least a day or two in advance of the class.
